AWAKEN | DAY 18
“I don’t know about you, but I’m running hard for the finish line. I’m giving it everything I’ve got. No sloppy living for me! I’m staying alert and in top condition. I’m not going to get caught napping, telling everyone else all about it and then missing out myself.”I CORINTHIANS 9:26-27
I have a deep admiration for endurance runners. Their commitment to the finish line no matter the odds or pain, or how many others pass them is laudable. “Push, push, push!” I remember hearing time and again from the coaches, teammates and fans as my husband and I rooted for our son and daughter down on the track. Tears would well up in our eyes as we watched them and others who stretched themselves beyond what they thought they were capable of. They gave every ounce of energy and strength they had, sometimes breaking records and other times just finishing the race.
The Apostle Paul uses the runner metaphor in several of his letters. When I read verses referencing a race, I get the same stirring I had when I sat in the school stadium cheering on my kids. I’m challenged to give this Christian race everything I have despite the persecution or set backs, despite the temptation to quit while everyone else seems to be breezing along. No way am I falling behind and missing out on the prize — a life eternal, a life above through Christ Jesus (Philippians 3:14).
Ask The Lord today to give you an endurance mind-set, discarding the if-this-gets-too-hard-I’m-fittin’-to-quit attitude. He will give you what you need to persevere.
Father, you know the things that vex me and discourage me from going on. You know the temptations I have to say, “What’s the point?” Jesus is the point! The calling you’ve put on my life is the reason I run, the reason I keep going. Give me a tenacity to finish this Christian race. I want to see you!
